How To Prepare For Acupuncture?

Whether your first appointment is coming up or you are returning to our clinic for another acupuncture session, proper preparation can help you get the most out of your session.

At our clinic, many patients ask us about how to prepare for their acupuncture sessions, from what they should wear to what they should eat beforehand. Taking a couple of simple steps before your acupuncture session can boost your experience and improve your treatment benefits.

Eating before your acupuncture appointment

One of the most essential preparations before acupuncture is properly timing your meals. If you arrive too hungry or overindulged, it can impact your comfort during your acupuncture session, and even potentially affect your body’s response to the treatment. We suggest eating a light meal at least two hours before your acupuncture appointment. This will give your body enough time to digest the meal while ensuring you have enough energy for the session.

We recommend avoiding arriving on an empty stomach, as this could make you feel lightheaded during treatment. Similarly, overeating or consuming a heavy meal just before your acupuncture session can make you feel uncomfortable when lying on our treatment table. A light, easily digestible meal is your best choice on your treatment days.

Stay hydrated before acupuncture

Proper hydration is key to benefitting from the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. We recommend drinking water consistently throughout the day leading up to your acupuncture appointment. We suggest avoiding consuming large amounts of water before your treatment as it could make you feel uncomfortable and increase the urge to use the restroom during your session.

Staying well hydrated before your acupuncture session ensures comfort while maintaining good circulation, supporting your body’s response.

Alcohol & caffeine considerations for acupuncture treatment

Before acupuncture, it is recommended to minimize your caffeine intake before your appointment because it can increase nerve sensitivity and for some, it can make you feel slightly jittery during the session. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, you don’t have to eliminate coffee completely, however, we suggest reducing your intake on acupuncture treatment days or having your last sip of coffee at least two hours before your treatment.

We also advise that you are alcohol-free for at least 24 hours before your acupuncture session as alcohol can impact the accuracy of your feedback and your body’s response to the treatment.

Dress comfortably for your acupuncture session

Many patients often ask what to wear during an acupuncture session. The key is comfort. Dress in loose-fitting and comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the common acupuncture points. For more information on what to wear, take a quick read of our guide on “What to Wear to Acupuncture.”

Arrive with plenty of time to spare

We ask our patients to arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled acupuncture session. This allows you to use the restroom if needed, complete any necessary paperwork without feeling rushed, take a few minutes to relax and decompress, and discuss any concerns you have with one of our practitioners.

Running late or feeling rushed before your appointment can increase stress levels, which can affect your body’s response to the acupuncture treatment. Those extra minutes to prepare for acupuncture can make a massive difference in your whole acupuncture healing journey.

We also recommend scheduling your acupuncture session at a time when you will not need to rush back to stressful activities. While it is fine to return to normal daily activities after treatment, taking some time to relax can be beneficial.

Bring any relevant health documents & information

If this is your first visit to our clinic, or if anything has changed in your health status since last time you visited, bring any relevant medical information with you to your appointment.

These may include the following:

  • Recent medical test results/diagnoses
  • A list of current medications and supplements that you’re taking
  • Notes of any symptoms you are experiencing
  • Notes of any recent injuries or changes in your medical condition

Providing this information helps us provide you with the most effective and appropriate treatment for your specific conditions/situation.

Mentally preparing for acupuncture

Your mental well-being can greatly impact your treatment experience. In the hours leading up to your acupuncture session take a few deep breaths if you are feeling anxious, try to minimize exposure to stressful situations such as intense emotional conversations, and remember that it is absolutely normal to feel nervous, particularly if it is your first acupuncture appointment.

Arriving with a calm mental state will not only put you at ease but also help your body remain receptive to treatment and enhance the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture.

Track your symptoms

Before your appointment, make a quick note of any symptoms you have recently been feeling.

This may include:

  • Stress levels
  • Sleep patterns
  • Pain levels & locations
  • Digestive function
  • Energy levels
  • Any other health concerns that you would like to discuss with our practitioners

This information helps us tailor your treatment plan and track your progress over time.
